Slowly but surely, spring is coming! It's wonderful that you can learn from anywhere with openHPI - whether with a delicious cappuccino on the balcony or in the S-Bahn on the way to work. We are happy to present you with a variety of courses for the upcoming weeks.
Energy Efficient Programming (English) - starting on 12th April 2023
This 2-week English-language course deals with the energy efficiency of software and digital technologies. Professor Vesselin Iossifov from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences will teach specific programming principles and techniques that increase the energy efficiency of an algorithm - using examples of C and Assembly language. With examples from linear algebra, it will introduce energy-efficient coding techniques for x86/x64-based computers and present measurement methods for the energy consumption of programs.
The course is intended primarily for undergraduate and graduate students in computer science, communications engineering, electrical engineering, or closely related fields.

Introduction to Quantum Computing (German) - Part 3 - Starting on 12th April 2023
Another long-awaited continuation of the Quantum Computing series will start on the 12th of April: Introduction to Quantum Computing Part 3, led by Prof. Bettina Just.
You will be introduced to the mechanism of phase kickback, which is the basis of many quantum algorithms. Here you will also encounter some already-known examples of quantum algorithms. Afterwards, it will be about quantum error recovery. The course will also explain why quantum bits have complex ( and not simply real) amplitudes. The course concludes with a dive into Adiabatic Quantum Computing, which works quite differently than quantum computing with the circuit model and offers a promising approach to solving optimization problems.
The course presumes some basic proficiency in quantum computing. You are expected to be familiar with the basic concepts and to understand the basic operation of quantum gates, registers, bits, and circuits. If you are not yet completely comfortable with these topics, we recommend attending Part 1 and Part 2 of the course series.

AI and Data Quality (German) - Starting on 19th April 2023
This 2-week German-language course focuses on ensuring that the use of artificial intelligence not only provides the right data quality but also meets ethical and legal requirements. The course will be taught by HPI professor Felix Naumann, media ethicist Dr. Jessica Heesen from the University of Tübingen, criminal law professor Frauke Rostalski from the University of Köln, and standards expert Dr. Sebastian Hallensleben from the German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE e. V.).
The course participants will learn that if AI is to be used in a socially acceptable way, it will require massive volumes of suitable and high-quality training data. Computer science, law, ethics, and standardization will each have a special perspective on this Big Data issue surrounding machine learning.
Beginners in the topic can learn more about data collection and data processing to use good, fair and balanced training data to create fair AI systems.

Farewell of Prof. Meinel from the HPI Executive Board
openHPI would not exist in its current form without one person: Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel led countless courses on Cybersecurity, Web and Internet technologies, and influenced the learning platform like no other. On 31st March 2023, he ended his work as managing director of the Hasso Plattner Institute after 18 years. However, he remains committed to his passion project openHPI and we look forward to many more years together! In the FAZ podcast (German) he discusses his plans further.
Warm Greetings,
the openHPI team
