Extreme weather events have caused severe damage and loss of life in recent decades. Traditional numerical weather prediction, while accurate, is computationally intensive—requiring supercomputers that consume massive amounts of energy. In contrast, energy-efficient AI offers a transformative alternative. This course explores how modern AI models can drastically reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions while improving the accuracy and accessibility of weather forecasting. Through practical examples, we demonstrate how techniques like LoRA fine-tuning, diffusion models, and GNSS-based sensing can enhance forecasting capabilities on both large and personal devices. By the end of this course, learners will understand how efficient AI methods enable sustainable, high-precision weather prediction for the future.

Künstliche Intelligenz durchdringt zunehmend unseren (Arbeits)Alltag.

High-Performance-Computing with SLURM at HPI

About this course
This course consists of video recordings made by the former Digital Health Compute Lab (DHC Lab). HPI has since established a central Scientific Compute Infrastructure (SCI), superseding the DHC Lab. The videos still refer to the DHC Lab and its clusters. The concepts they teach apply directly to the current clusters of the SCI and the AI Service Center (AISC). For the exact commands, partitions and settings on these clusters, use the official documentation at docs.sc.hpi.de.
Why is this topic relevant?
When a computation needs more resources than a personal computer can provide, it runs on an HPC cluster. At HPI, the SCI and the AISC operate such clusters. To use them efficiently, every user needs to understand how a cluster works and how to schedule jobs well. This raises the overall throughput of the clusters and gets your results back sooner.
What will participants learn?
SLURM (Simple Linux Utility for Resource Management) is an open-source system for cluster management and job scheduling. This course teaches the basics of using SLURM.
Participants who have not worked with the Linux command line before start with a short introduction to it. The course then covers the basics of SLURM. Later modules cover advanced topics and include master classes on optimizing HPC workloads.
What is it useful for?
The course is not mandatory, but we recommend it to everyone who wants to work with the SCI or AISC compute resources. It covers the basic knowledge that helps you avoid common problems, such as failed or stuck jobs, and makes your work on the shared clusters more efficient.

Digital technologies are indispensable to achieving Sustainable Development Goals and reducing carbon emissions in many sectors. Yet, computer systems themselves have an immense energy requirement for their countless devices, data centers, applications and global networks. The shift to digital in living, learning and earning has brought us closer to the time when digitization will have a major negative impact on the climate. Since digitization has many important benefits, research, teaching and policy must strategically prioritize to deliver digitization with less energy consumption, increase algorithmic efficiency so that people and the planet thrive, and make “Sustainability by Design” the new leading paradigm in digital engineering worldwide.
Design Thinking
Since 2007, the HPI D-School has been an integral part of the Hasso Plattner Institute Potsdam. Every year, around 400 students from all over the world get to know the Design Thinking Innovation Method as part of an additional degree programme. In cooperation with project partners, the students develop user-centered solutions for complex problems. As part of the already completed HPI-Stanford Design Thinking Research Program, scientists investigated how and why Design Thinking Innovations work or fail. Multidisciplinary research teams from Stanford University and HPI worked on various Design Thinking Topics on process, methods, teamwork and tools to holistically investigate the phenomenon of innovation in all its dimensions. Based on this program and from the daily work of the D-School, the question always moves us: How can we offer design thinking online and thus make it accessible to a larger audience? Prof. Uli Weinberg, Dr. Claudia Nicolai and several other Design Thinkers took the plunge and developed online courses on the subject of Design Thinking. More information can be found [here] [1]. In order to further explore the potential of human-centred innovation, the [Chair of Design Thinking and Innovation Research][2] was established under the direction of [Prof. Dr. Falk Ueberickel][3]. In their course *Mastering Design Thinking in Organizations*, Professor Uebernickel and Dr. Danielly de Paula give insights into their findings.
