Proofs of Achievement and Guidelines

Please note: This is expected to come into force from December 2026.

§ 1 Proof of Achievement

Users who enroll in a learning opportunity on openHPI can receive Proof of Achievement based on their performance. The Proof of Achievement is always issued only in the language of the respective offering.

openHPI issues the following types of Proof of Achievement:
(1) Certificates, upon successful completion of a final examination (Exam)
(2) Confirmation of Participation, upon successful participation in an openHPI learning opportunity

§ 2 Participation in Learning Opportunities

Participation in openHPI learning opportunities is free of charge, but access may be restricted depending on the format of the offering. Information about admission requirements is provided on the corresponding overview page of the learning opportunity.

§ 3 Certificates (formerly Records of Achievement)

  1. Certificates can only be earned in courses or projects.

  2. Certificates are issued upon successful completion of the exam. The requirements for successfully completing an exam are set out in § 4. The certificate includes the first and last name and date of birth with which the user is registered on openHPI. For projects, the requirements for obtaining a certificate may differ. Further information is provided on the respective learning-opportunity pages.

  3. Certificates for successfully completed courses and projects are available for download in the profile area no later than three weeks after completion. For a course, the date shown on the certificate corresponds to the date on which the exam was submitted. For projects, the project period is indicated.

  4. The certificate contains the following information: first and last name, date of birth, title of the learning opportunity, total score achieved, number of exam attempts, a link for authenticity verification, and a QR code.

  5. No Certificates / Records of Achievement are issued for courses in the openHPI archive.

§ 4 Exam

  1. Unless otherwise stated in the information for the course or project, there is a graded final examination (Exam) at the end of the learning opportunity.

  2. The exam is unlocked once the user has completed 75% of the corresponding learning material.

  3. The exam consists of single-choice questions (with one correct answer) and/or multiple-choice questions (with one or more correct answers). The user must be logged in to openHPI with their name and password to take the exam.

  4. The time allowed for completing the final exam is 1 hour. The exam may be repeated once. The number of attempts is stated on the certificate.

  5. After successfully passing the exam, or after failing it on the second attempt, the exam cannot be taken again.

  6. The exam may be conducted in German or English, depending on the language in which the learning units were taught.

  7. The exam is passed if 70% or more of the questions are answered correctly.

  8. Exams always consist of 10 questions at three different difficulty levels:

  • 3 questions at the “easy” difficulty level, worth 1 point each
  • 3 questions at the “medium” difficulty level, worth 2 points each
  • 4 questions at the “hard” difficulty level, worth 3 points each

  1. Quizzes and exercises are ungraded and are intended to reinforce what has been learned. The number of attempts is not taken into account.

  2. The CodeOcean programming platform is frequently used in programming courses. Users can use it to solve programming tasks directly in their browser. Once the tasks have been completed, the score achieved is transmitted to openHPI via a standardized interface (LTI).

§ 5 Confirmation of Participation

  1. Confirmations of Participation can be obtained in workshops, courses, and projects.

  2. To receive a Confirmation of Participation, the user must complete at least 75% of the content in the respective learning opportunity. Confirmations of Participation include the first and last name and date of birth with which the user is registered on openHPI.

  3. After completing more than 75% of the content in the learning opportunity, the Confirmation of Participation will be available for download in the profile area no later than three weeks after completion. The date shown on the Confirmation of Participation corresponds to the date on which it is downloaded.

  4. Confirmations of Participation will continue to be issued for courses in the openHPI archive. The requirements for obtaining a Confirmation of Participation in openHPI-archive courses can be found in the information provided on the respective course page.
