Prerequisites

The prerequisites for this lecture include a basic knowledge in databases, logic, and XML, as well as familiarity with fundamental web technologies such as URLs, HTTP, and HTML. In particular, you may find most of the prerequisites in the textbooks mentioned below. Because of a large fraction of German speaking students, we have also included comparable textbooks in German language (DE):

  • Basic Web Knowledge:

    Basic knowledge about HTTP, TCP/IP, and other web application protocols will be of use.

  • Databases, SQL:

    In general you should be familiar with relational database systems and the database query language SQL.

  • XML:

    You should understand the basic principles of the extensible markup language (XML) and the XML Schema Definition Language. Also some knowledge about XSLT stylesheet transformations would be an advantage, but is not strictly mandatory.

  • Logic:

    You should have a sound understanding of propositional logic (PL) and first order logic (FOL) including canonical forms and basic inference methods, in particular resolution. Although we will recapitulate the most important basics of PL and FOL in the course of the lecture, you might find it helpful to deepen your understanding with the help of the textbook below.
