Welcome to the openHPI Course "Semantic Web Technologies"
In the following weeks you will learn about the technical and conceptual foundations of the Semantic Web. We will start with a brief recapitulation of the development of the World Wide Web and consider the limits of its underlying technology, before sharing with you the vision of the future Semantic Web. We will continue with the basic architecture of the Semantic Web and the general task, how to represent knowledge in an machine understandable way via formal knowledge representations (ontologies) in the Semantic Web. Thereby, you should get a deeper understanding about the new possibilities offered by Semantic Web as well as learn about its principle limits. Finally, we will conclude the course with a brief overview of Semantic Web based applications. You will learn about ontological engineering, linked open data, and semantic search.

- Week: Semantic Web Basic Architecture II: How to ask for (semantic) data? How to store semantic data? How to get semantic data into the Web? - SPARQL, SPARQL 1.1, Triple Stores, RDFa and microdata
- Week: Knowledge Representation I - How to represent knowledge? The foundations of logics. - Ontologies, propositional logic, first order logic
- Week: Knowledge Representation II - How to describe the world? How to represent knowledge in the Semantic Web? What, when it gets more complicated? - Description Logics, OWL, and Rules
- Week: Applications in the Web of Data - How to handle knowledge? From text to knowledge. The State of the Web of Data today. - Ontological Engineering, Named Entity Recognition, Linked Open Data, Semantic Search
