Welcome to Week 1

Key question: "The Internet is great, but is it really so complex?"

Dear Learning Community,

Welcome to Week 1 of our online course, "Internetworking with TCP/IP."

In this first week we will give you an overview of the entire course content and reveal the inner workings of the Internet. The main focus this week is especially on different types of networks, the TCP/IP protocol stack, packet switching and error detection/ correction codes as well as Internet applications and security. We have prepared a quiz in the form of a self-test for each course module so you can check your learning progress. These self-test can be taken at anytime and as often as you like. There are no time limits for these tests.

We have prepared a homework assignment for the end of the week. You will need about 30-45 minutes to complete this exercise. Please be aware that homework assignments have a time limit and can be done only one time (closing the browser does not put the timer on hold). Once you press the start button begin solving the homework immediately. Before you begin, it is important to think about whether you will have enough time and quiet to complete the homework in this sitting. It’s also a good idea to have a pen, paper and a calculator handy since there can also be homework that requires calculation. The results of each week’s homework will then be posted after the deadline expires.

In case you have questions or comments about the course content or homework assignments, we encourage you to address your fellow students via the weekly forum. The teaching team will regularly check for new posts and is glad to offer you assistance at any time.

Have fun and the best of luck in the first course week!
