A digital learning platform for artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is a key technology that plays an increasingly important role in the economy and in our everyday lives. As part of the "KI-Campus" & "KI-Campus2" projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the competent use of AI is to be improved and AI competence in Germany generally strengthened. For this purpose, high-quality digital and thematically relevant learning offers are made available to the general public free of charge on a platform.

The three-year project "AI Campus 1.0" was implemented by a consortium that included the Hasso Plattner Institute, the Stifterverband, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the two companies NEOCOSMO and mmb Institute. HPI took over the technical maintenance of the platform and supported the course providers with its many years of experience in the design, implementation and execution of digital learning offerings.

In the follow-up project "KI-Campus 2.0", which has been running since January 2023, HPI is again entrusted with the technical maintenance of the platform, among other things. The Charité, the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) and the FernUniversität Hagen joined as new consortium partners.

The project goal

The primary goal of the KI-Campus project is to educate and train a broad spectrum of interested people in Germany in the field of AI. The use of the online learning offers on AI is open to both students and lifelong learners. In the course of the project, a thematically diverse, high-quality academic educational offering was established for this purpose.

In the first KI-Campus project, the digital learning platform "KI-Campus", which specializes in the topic of artificial intelligence (AI), was initially set up as a prototype. Different actors (universities, educational institutions, companies, etc.) were enabled to provide online learning offers on the topic of "AI" on the platform. Through the intended, strong networking, the need and acceptance conditions of a nationwide platform were clarified and long-term operator models were developed.

In the sub-project "MOOC Platform for the AI Campus", HPI transformed its existing MOOC platform "openHPI", which has proven itself over many years, into an open source project. This also included the steering and moderation of the developer community, as well as the quality control of the code components contributed by the community. In addition, the HPI MOOC platform was further developed with a focus on AI-driven features and then included, for example, chatbots, transcriptions, translations and recommendations.

In the follow-up project, which started in January 2023, in addition to the technical maintenance of the platform, the standardized interfaces for connecting to aggregators will be expanded, among other things, and existing transcription and translation tools will be connected.

In addition, connection to an online proctoring system for monitoring exams is planned, and course dependencies and prerequisites will be implemented.

There are also plans to develop an overarching concept for digital educational certificates, as well as to test micro-degrees as a new form of qualification for continuing academic education.
