- 00:00The Internet has become 50 years old, and in that time it has profoundly changed our world.
- 00:07Today the Internet looks like this, the light points stand for networks, that are interconnected, worldwide,
- 00:15a dense network of millions of networks, which are united there in this network of networks.
- 00:25And started, it started in 1969, on 29 October 1969, that's the birth year of the Internet, and a lot of interesting things happened in '69.
- 00:37So the first moon landing was in 1969, the famous Woodstock Festival was in 1969, and the television tower in Berlin, which also turned 50 this year, was built in 69.
- 00:55And a whole series of other events have taken place. Why don't you start by saying on the discussion board what you remember, what started in '69, what turned 50 this year.
- 01:13And so, you have the picture in your eye from the Internet earlier, that's what the Internet looked like back then, the year you were born.
- 01:20Four computers at four universities have been combined to the network then known as ARPANET,
- 01:33and the goal was to have a scientific exchange, a concept development, a piloting of a network, of a connection of computers, which are located in very different networks with very different platforms.
- 01:54Until then, it was always only possible - the computers were very different in the different operating systems -
- 02:02and the only way to do that was with the exact same guy and computer running under exactly the same operating system exchange data and information.
- 02:11And the question was, you saw, there won't be the one platform, which is used all over the world, you have to live with this diversity of platforms.
- 02:20And there was the question, can you do something that is still possible? despite different platforms, despite different network technologies, to exchange information across these boundaries between the platforms of the networks.
- 02:34In this respect it is not surprising that one of the first Internet applications - still works today - Telnet was.
- 02:41And Telnet was the possibility, to log on to a computer at a remote location.
- 02:49Of course he had to be a member of this network, but with this telnet service, it was then possible
- 02:55that I was able to log in from one computer to another computer on the network and then had them perform certain calculations and solve tasks.
- 03:09Today half of the world's population is online, so insane growth in 50 years, that something new, revolutionary new, because something like internet and computers has never existed in human history,
- 03:26that something this new suddenly really does affect the whole world and half, 51 percent of the world population, which has also grown rapidly in recent years.
- 03:41In particular, the mobile use of the Internet has also promoted this rapid development, let's take another look at this.
- 03:50So here are the users in millions, so there are 4.33 billion active Internet users, and of these, 3.937 billion are mobile Internet users, i.e. those with a mobile device, typically with a smartphone or a tablet there on the Internet
- 04:15Active in social media are 3.5 billion people, and active in social media with mobile devices are 3.4 billion, almost the same number.
- 04:31You see, this mobile use is very popular and has greatly advanced the Internet.
- 04:37There's a famous internet minute people are talking about, so what happens on the Internet in 60 seconds?
- 04:46Let's start here, so within a minute try or don't try, but actually do it, one million users log on to Facebook.
- 05:06Four and a half million videos are watched on the Internet in one minute.
- 05:07It is wiped 1.4 million times, i.e. looked at from one application to another, 46,200, i.e. almost 50,000 new contributions will be posted, 41 million messages are sent with the various systems that exist.
- 05:34In one minute, almost 400,000 new apps are downloaded from the Internet, 100, almost 200 million, 188 million e-mails are sent and received every minute.
- 05:502.1 million snaps are created, one million streams viewed and made nearly 4 million searches.
- 06:01Well, that's a good way of saying what's on the fast track, on connection, on scaling through the Internet takes place and has taken place.
- 06:15And this is an important issue, leading to the explanation of many phenomena, that arise in our new age.
- 06:24Let's take a look at the numbers for streaming video on the Internet, so, users were asked, about a thousand users were asked, how they watch videos via stream and where they get them from.
- 06:41And this is where it is leading, with 65 per cent of the users calling video portals YouTube or Vimeo. By the way, Vimeo is the portal we use to broadcast our openHPI videos.
- 06:59Television broadcasts that are not watched live, but which are downloaded from the media library, also 65 percent say they do.
- 07:12Feature films, series watched via on-demand portals, 42 percent, current TV programmes in the livestream 40 percent,
- 07:22so I don't even want to go into detail, the usage behaviour has changed very much,
- 07:28and this streaming, to be able to watch broadcasts, news, videos over the Internet, is very popular and of course has brought the internet usage very high.
- 07:40Online traffic on the Internet, which is already very strong today dominated by video news.
- 07:47Here is the topic of games, online gaming, and it shows the development over the years 2013 to 2018.
- 07:58It is counted in millions and the turnover is calculated, so how money was made.
- 08:07And that's a pretty good measure of how much use there is, this light blue area that is so micro transaction, virtual goods, additional content and the dark ones are actually subscription fees.
- 08:23So all these statistics show the strong growth.
- 08:27Here once again from a completely different area, payment systems, that work over the internet and here are some numbers - now this time from Germany -
- 08:39where 15- to 79-year-olds were asked in a survey, what payment options they use in life, on the Internet, in the real world.
- 08:52And there you see, already today PayPal and similar payment systems. 52 percent of them say they use them.
- 08:59In contrast, only a quarter of respondents pay on account in the traditional value, 26 percent. Direct debit, credit card, twelve percent, direct payments via bank account, six percent.
- 09:13So you see, these modern payment methods, which can only be realized via the Internet have already strongly seized the masses and are being used.
- 09:25Another topic, which is only conceivable in the context of the Internet, Topics such as smart homes, smart cities, smart traffic,
- 09:33so that by using the Internet at home, for example when leaving, locking the house, because the heating is automatically shut down
- 09:44or is booted up when you come back or is run up just before you come back, that the light goes on automatically when you walk into a room, and so on.
- 09:55So there are many, many serious ideas, many toys.
- 10:00And here are the top five listed in the world, how they use such things in the home.
- 10:07You can tell by the color code here. These are the dark blue countries, USA, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, South Korea.
- 10:14They are already in the mid 20 percent of households, that use such smart home technologies.
- 10:24Germany, as in many areas of digitisation, was somewhat behind, it's 16 percent.
- 10:31By the way, this is something we will see at various points in the course, that we here as a leading industrialized nation in the pre-Internet age with these new digital techniques and applications.
- 10:47So after 50 years the Internet is omnipresent today.
- 10:53You can see these different applications here, which we will discuss further and in detail during the course.
