- 00:00I would like to invite you to our openHPI course "Blockchain - Security even without Trust Center".
- 00:04Blockchain is a technology that stretches imagination and
- 00:14of the public has been very stimulated and also very polarized.
- 00:19It has become known in the context of bitcoins, the first cryptocurrency. That's where you need context around this issue
- 00:29especially if you're not a computer scientist or you're not deeper into what this means.
- 00:37this blockchain?
- 00:39What's behind it?
- 00:40This is exactly the question we want to address in our openHPI course on blockchain technology.
- 00:49That should be the focus in this course, where it's all about the security of the blockchain.
- 00:57We have another blockchain course, namely "Blockchain - Hype or Innovation" offered together with Ms. Gayvoronskaya 2018 and 2021.
- 01:06With a lot of interest. You see over 14,000 enrolled learners who had engaged with it.
- 01:16There's a book here on this blockchain, "Hype or Innovation"?
- 01:22And we want to look at the technical question now in this course, what does blockchain offer as a security concept
- 01:34Without a trust center.
- 01:37And in the course, that's where we'll go deeper into how blockchain technology works.
- 01:43We'll look at that, the basics, which are primarily in the cryptographic area.
- 01:49For the basic understanding, we will take a closer look at the so-called distributed systems, what does that mean? What are the challenges
- 01:57are there, which approaches to solving them, and especially the topic of how does trust work in such a technically distributed system?
- 02:06network, system, where nobody knows the other, where you don't know how trustworthy the other participants are?
- 02:13How can you establish trust there, so the challenges in such a trustless system to establish trust.
- 02:21The blockchain offers approaches to solving this, and we want to take a closer look at that and how it works technically,
- 02:29which then results from the interaction of different crypto technologies.
- 02:34And then, of course, the brief is to talk about bitcoin.
- 02:37The blockchain-based currency. In the first week of the course, we want to ask ourselves why are systems
- 02:46distributed at all, how do you establish consistency, the same level of knowledge in such distributed systems?
- 02:55We look at types of errors, in these consensus algorithms that ensure that all participants have the same level of information.
- 03:05It's not easy, there are errors and this lack of trust in such a distributed system that you want to change.
- 03:16There one wants to let trust move in.
- 03:17That plays the consensus algorithms a large role, over which is manufactured surely that all over the same knowledge.
- 03:24have.
- 03:25And there's a whole set of problems there.
- 03:28This is the content of the first course week. Then in the second course week we start with Nakamoto's consensus algorithm
- 03:36And that played a big role because the Nakamoto, I don't even know if that's a synonym for a group of
- 03:43Computer scientists.
- 03:45They wrote a paper there that introduced bitcoin, which is a cryptocurrency system and how
- 03:54this can work without a bank?
- 03:56On the Internet, on a distributed network like that?
- 03:59That is what we will deal with in the second week.
- 04:05We'll see, so what constitutes the security of the Nakamoto consensus?
- 04:10And then through that, have a good overview of the background and how blockchain technology works.
- 04:17They can earn credit in this course, they can earn a certificate of attendance if they have at least
- 04:2750% of the learning and they can even get a certificate of achievement that we issue for all learners,
- 04:36every week there is a test offered and in this test you have to do at least 50% of the possible
- 04:46Achievement points.
- 04:48Then we can confirm him to participate. The teaching team, I'm happy to collaborate with the scientific
- 04:57Staff and PhD students at my chair, Alexander Mühle We look forward to seeing you in our course.
