- 00:06The web today and tomorrow, let's speak about social web semantic and the service web.
- 00:16The web was designed in nineteen ninety and the evolution of the world
- 00:20wide web in this last twenty five years shape today's web
- 00:24through numerous transformation. So originally
- 00:27web was read-only web or static web. All the resources
- 00:33were static HTML pages and by means of HTTP protocol the user
- 00:40requested and received this document.
- 00:44Often this phase of the world wide web is named web 1.0.
- 00:52Only a few experts also were able to publish content
- 00:57to understand the HTML, to design such HTML pages, to set up a
- 01:02web server to place this resources on the web server and to
- 01:07make it a weight over the world wide web.
- 01:10And the resources that were offered over the world wide web
- 01:14were mostly static. And then
- 01:18around two thousand it started to change the character of the world wide web,
- 01:25to change into participation web.
- 01:29This development we can see up to now, some people
- 01:33call this web 2.0,
- 01:37read-write web. In that phase users became able for example by mean of
- 01:45the ajax technology we discussed already to publish own content
- 01:49in a very simple way. So it was not more necessary to be IT
- 01:54specialist everyone could publish content
- 01:59mainly through the social web
- 02:01applications, so an important characteristic or the important
- 02:05character of the web 2.0 is what's also called social web.
- 02:13In the time although dynamic websites websites become more and more common
- 02:19so by means of the web programming on client side on server side the
- 02:25web pages were designed
- 02:30designed dynamically exactly
- 02:33according to the wishes and
- 02:37parameters given by the user.
- 02:41On the same side webpages become more and more complex,
- 02:45new technologies allowed the developer to build future rich web-based applications.
- 02:53This is the web as you know it from today.
- 02:58But then the next step next phase in development
- 03:04of the web is sometimes also called web 3.0 serves the semantic
- 03:10and the service web or the semantic and the execution web.
- 03:16This is an development still emerging and here its characteristic
- 03:22that the information becomes machine readable
- 03:26and understandable.See former phases the web was designed for
- 03:30humans and humans where the user and interact by the web the information was designed
- 03:36in a way that it's understandable readable by humans.
- 03:42But more and more one has detected that the web can also be used
- 03:49for machine to machine communication, and that machine to machine
- 03:54communication becomes important if one creates more complex web applications.
- 04:00For example to produce a dynamic output, a dynamic dynamic webpage,
- 04:06by means of several web applications placed on different servers in the
- 04:13in the world that interact, that have to interact to each other to
- 04:18produce this page the user wants to see.
- 04:22This is the executing web or the service web if we speak about semantic web.
- 04:28Today's situation is that search genes are keyboard based
- 04:34and a search machine looks exactly for the string of characters and then
- 04:39all the information all the resources available in the web where this
- 04:44string of characters plays an important role are
- 04:48shown to the to the user.
- 04:52But such search machines from today they don't understand the meaning
- 04:58of this string of characters they don't understand the meaning
- 05:01of the search term and documents so what we expect in the future is
- 05:07that and this is an expectation to the so called semantic web
- 05:12is that it's not only longer, is only the string of characters
- 05:19that is a machine as the web is understanding but the web has some means
- 05:25to understand the meaning of this
- 05:29string of characters.
- 05:31So the semantic web no longer consists of
- 05:34stupid documents but of things, of people, of places, of events and
- 05:40their relations to each other.
- 05:44And the other important
- 05:47part or characteristic of this web 3.0 phases are
- 05:52the service web or web services many web applications become interconnected
- 05:58through the web service technology we will discuss
- 06:03as well as semantic web in this week.
- 06:09But that is not an end of the development,
- 06:13there's a next transformation starting today,
- 06:17and this is a mobile web some people call this web 4.0.
- 06:23Here parallel alternative versions of the existing web
- 06:28occur and are accessible over smartphones,
- 06:32so the documents and the resources in the web are designed
- 06:38also to be usable by such smartphones.
- 06:42So here is the possibility to add
- 06:45a new meaning by taking into account the local context
- 06:51of a person is a characteristic, so the web sees, understand, knows
- 06:58where the person is located and then
- 07:02it is able to provide resources that are meaningful exactly
- 07:07in this local context.
- 07:10So the largely use of
- 07:14the service web of web services this is a characterization of this mobile
- 07:21web as well as a usable
- 07:23in a mobile way.
- 07:27This is the end what comes next
- 07:32how web 5.0 looks like.
- 07:36Discussion about this
- 07:39you invite to develop your ideas in our forum and our openHPI for room
- 07:46to submit your ideas discuss ideas
- 07:50there are definitely new developments the web can go on and for the
- 07:57people for the developers of the web technologies, this visions,
- 08:01this new ideas are very important to think,
- 08:04to get input for developing new technologies.
- 08:11So in this week we speak about the social semantic and service web or the
- 08:21web 3.0.
- 08:33These three aspects are important social.
- 08:38What is the social web applications, you know, a lot of them.
- 08:42How do they how did they emerge how do they work the technology
- 08:48they are using? We have already discussed for example AJAX
- 08:51and the main characteristic. I already mentioned is that people
- 08:55you and me can become resources, can
- 08:59publish information in the world wide web.
- 09:03Then we speak about semantic web,
- 09:07How do today's search engines work and what are their limitations?
- 09:12What are semantic? And what are the principles of semantic web?
- 09:17This is what we ask ourself when we discuss
- 09:21semantic web, what's going on is development and what is the vision.
- 09:26And then finally we have to consider the service web
- 09:30how do web services is the enabling technology for the service web
- 09:36work?How is the technology,
- 09:40which kind of technology is in place to implement this vision
- 09:46of a service web?
