- 00:07- Hey Basta, thanks that you
- 00:09could make it for this interview,
- 00:11and that you agreed to volunteer
- 00:12and found the time for it.
- 00:14So, I just wanted to quickly
- 00:16remind you what this is all for.
- 00:18I'm working on a research project,
- 00:20and I'm looking into,
- 00:22how do people go about when they're looking for a job.
- 00:26And I'm still trying to see,
- 00:29where are the problems and the challenges
- 00:31there for different people.
- 00:33So I've prepared some questions,
- 00:36but at any time if anything is unclear
- 00:39or you have a question,
- 00:40please let me know.
- 00:42- OK.
- 00:46- And I would like to do a recording of this,
- 00:48because I don't have a second person who could help me out
- 00:51taking notes. And the recording,
- 00:53though will be just for my personal use
- 00:56to listen to it again
- 00:57after the interview.
- 00:59- OK. So you won't publish it?
- 01:01- No it won't be... - At YouTube?
- 01:02- No no, it won't be on any social media or anywhere.
- 01:05It's just for personal documentation.
- 01:08- Good. - Is that okay?
- 01:10- Yeah.
- 01:11- Before I start the recording,
- 01:15I also just want to point out,
- 01:16there is no right
- 01:17or wrong answer to any of the questions that I'm asking.
- 01:20So it's really I want to get to know your personal stories,
- 01:23your personal experiences
- 01:25when it comes to looking for a job.
- 01:27- OK. I'm ready.
- 01:29- You're ready?
- 01:30- Just ask me anything.
- 01:31- Alright, so I'll start the recording.
- 01:33It's recording now.
- 01:35Basta, I would like to know,
- 01:38could you tell me about the last time
- 01:39you were looking for a job?
- 01:42- OK. My last time I was looking for a job was
- 01:49some weeks ago.
- 01:51Actually, I'd like to change careers.
- 01:57Basically, I just set a job alert. And then
- 02:00I get every day
- 02:02some proposals.
- 02:04- OK. Can you walk me through the process?
- 02:07So you sign up...
- 02:08...what exactly happens when you go to job alert?
- 02:12- I go to the website
- 02:15and there I define some key words like where I do want to work,
- 02:19and what kind of job, what title.
- 02:21And every day based on this selection,
- 02:25they are going through the internet,
- 02:26looking for proposals and send me some proposals.
- 02:31- And what do you do from there?
- 02:33So you get the proposals...
- 02:36- I look through it,
- 02:37look what interests me,
- 02:38and then interesting ones, I copy the URL to an excel sheet.
- 02:44And then I look up the requirements,
- 02:47write them out,
- 02:48and have a look on my CV what
- 02:51in my CV fits to this requirement.
- 02:54And based on this I'm
- 02:56writing a motivation letter.
- 03:00- OK, interesting.
- 03:01So you are matching
- 03:02what you find in the requirements to what you already
- 03:06did in the past. - Yeah.
- 03:08- But where exactly do you choose
- 03:12then where to apply for? - Well, basically
- 03:16I look up if I like the language they use,
- 03:20if the company fits to me,
- 03:22you know, there is a kind of,
- 03:23old German corporate language
- 03:24they use which is just
- 03:28not that interesting.
- 03:30But I think the most interesting ones,
- 03:33I found on design consultancies,
- 03:36because they really know how to write a proposal.
- 03:40- OK. What is important
- 03:41when it comes to your job or to
- 03:43the job that you're applying for?
- 03:45What are the criteria, besides the language
- 03:48that you already mentioned,
- 03:49like what is important for you to want to work in this job?
- 03:54- Well, for me very important is that I can bring in my
- 03:59whole personality and my ideas,
- 04:01and can work them out.
- 04:05That's also what makes job searching so difficult for me,
- 04:09because to really find something what suits my criteria
- 04:13is very difficult, because there...
- 04:15there are a lot. Like I want to do this and that and that.
- 04:18And it has gone so far that
- 04:21in the end I stopped to look for jobs and start to freelance,
- 04:25and just write proposals to companies
- 04:28I think they're interesting.
- 04:31And they got some ideas,
- 04:32what can be done in their work.
- 04:35- Alright, so if I listen to you,
- 04:37is it that you kind of turned around the way
- 04:40you were looking for jobs?
- 04:41Beforehand you were always
- 04:43looking for something that people proposed.
- 04:47And now you just turned the whole process,
- 04:49and you're proposing.
- 04:51- Yeah, actually yes.
- 04:52- OK, wow, that's interesting!
- 04:55What is your best experience?
- 04:58Can you share how this is like...
- 05:02how this is helping you in a way to find new jobs? - What?
- 05:07- the writing your proposal.
- 05:10- Well...
- 05:12...normally when I just answer to proposals,
- 05:15I'm limited to what they offer.
- 05:17And when I propose something to other companies,
- 05:20my ideas, I'm not limited. I can do whatever I want
- 05:25and see what comes back.
- 05:27- OK.
- 05:28So, why do you do that?
- 05:31Why do you do that on the long run?
- 05:34- Well basically, I think it's...
- 05:38it can be hell to work somewhere,
- 05:40where I don't belong to or where I
- 05:41don't feel comfortable.
- 05:43And so as I don't like to be in hell...
- 05:47I sweat very fast when it's hot. [laughter]
- 05:51Yeah, I prefer to write my proposals,
- 05:53what idea I have so far,
- 05:55with this company and write, how do you say
- 06:00an offer? - Yeah, an offer...you mean when you propose?
- 06:03- I would propose them a project and see.
- 06:05if they work out or not.
- 06:09- Alright, there are already interesting findings in there,
- 06:13like interesting things you mentioned... - Thank you.
- 06:15- ...that I didn't think about when I started this project.
- 06:20I'm really happy with what I heard.
- 06:21But I would also like to give you the chance
- 06:23if anything popped up,
- 06:25if you have a comment, a question,
- 06:27something you want to share now?
- 06:29- Yeah, I want to share,
- 06:32never give up to find the thing
- 06:34what really interests you,
- 06:36because life is too short to do rubbish stuff.
- 06:39- Alright. - Never forget.
- 06:42- Yeah, I will keep it in mind.
- 06:44- Good. - Thank you. - Thank you.
