- 00:00Welcome to the first week of our Blockchain courses on OPENHPI
- 00:06Yes, it's happening now, and we want to think about the question, Blockchain, is that hype, is that innovation?
- 00:13And we, that's my PhD student, Tatjana Gayvoronskaya and I, Christoph Meinel.
- 00:19And this clip should briefly introduce the topic again.
- 00:24This first week, we've set the course for two weeks, in this first week we want to introduce the topic Blockchain.
- 00:33That's what we want with the help of statistics, we want to talk briefly about the history of the Blockchain technique.
- 00:39We want to introduce, explain and define basic concepts. and also the approaches and technologies, that underlie this issue.
- 00:50We'll get in a little bit. and take a look at the blockchain architecture, the various components,
- 00:57the corresponding security architecture behind it,
- 01:01We will discuss how it works and then at the end of the week.
- 01:06an initial analysis of strengths and challenges when dealing with Blockchain then discuss.
- 01:14You can find all this and much more in our study. We will make these available to you.
- 01:22We'll put them at your disposal, and, of course, that's what it's gonna be about,
- 01:27that there's a lot of information, that the topic is also relatively strongly polarized.
- 01:33So from all the media coverage, there are very large investments in this area, for example in the area of venture capital for start-ups.
- 01:43Large companies invest a lot, the first disappointments come to light,
- 01:49that not all promises were fulfilled in such a way how you'd imagined it.
- 01:54So there's a for and an against to blockchain technology, and that is precisely the intention of our course,
- 02:02that we offer you so much information, that you can develop your own opinion on the subject.
- 02:11That's it. If you look in the media these days, what do you see, what do you hear about blockchain technology?
- 02:19Bitcoin loses or gains value. With Bitcoins you can pay in cafes, restaurants, anywhere.
- 02:26Or, Blockchain can also improve authorities or even with crypto currency you can heat your own room.
- 02:35You got that right, so you can with these crypto currencies, a lot of computing effort is necessary,
- 02:40it generates heat, which can be used to heat the room.
- 02:45And the energy industry, but also the oil industry, or automotive industry, logistics,
- 02:53all use blockchain technology, and successful.
- 02:57And such issues as identity management, such as storage, like Exchange, like gambling or presidential elections,
- 03:07everything is possible with Blockchain.
- 03:09Even such an industrial giant as Amazon would also like to offer Blockchain as a service for the developers, so that everyone can develop and use it.
- 03:21And, of course, the whole thing leads to it, you have to think about it, is this some kind of hype?
- 03:26That's it. Or is Blockchain an all-purpose weapon?
- 03:30Gartner is a consulting firm from America and also makes its own statistics on new technologies such as "Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies".
- 03:41And here we can also see Blockchain in 2016.
- 03:46Maybe very briefly, that's always the curve, when an innovation begins to gain popularity.
- 03:52Here, this phase is then the peak of expectations, inflationary expectations.
- 03:59Typically, here comes the valley of disillusions, of disappointment, and then, slowly the value becomes, the value oscillates, the actual value then in productivity.
- 04:13Where is Blockchain now, 2016?
- 04:16So Blockchain in 2016 lies just before the peak of exaggerated expectations, and already in 2017, it will go down into the valley of disappointments.
- 04:27This means that Blockchain still has no standards, no interoperability.
- 04:31And that's why many are disappointed. A lot of people try that, but it doesn't all work out the way you expected.
- 04:39But of course, if there are the standards, then the technology can also be sustainable.
- 04:45If you take a look what's going on in Germany Bitkom - that is the industry association of the digital industry -
- 04:52what Bitkom expects, here, what status there of blockchain technology,
- 05:01then here the 26 % are for a rather young technology is already a very strong value.
- 05:09Here something like IT security, cloud computing, of course, that's been in the country for a while now,
- 05:14but this blockchain technology is one of the most important trends, and so it's important and right, that you want to take your time to get deeper into it.
- 05:25That's it. And when we see that, it gives us hope, it's an innovation, isn't it?
- 05:31See for yourself.
