Welcome to the online lecture "In-Memory Database Management 2014"
We are excited to launch the third iteration of the first online lecture on openHPI. For the next six weeks, our goal is to teach you the inner mechanics and the impacts of a column-oriented dictionary-compressed in-memory database.
We truly believe that the learning experience can be comparable or even superior to classroom learning if the social aspect of learning is leveraged. In this course, you have over 6,000 virtual classmates. We encourage you to use this potential by starting vital discussions.
Some Questions and Answers
Before we start with the lecture, we want to answer some frequently asked questions:
Do students have to be online or take tests on certain predefined dates?
Short answer: No. We believe that all learning should be 100% self-paced. You can watch the videos anytime you like, whenever you feel willing and focussed. We do not want to and will not urge you to stick to a predefined time-table, so your organization concerning learning is fully up to you.
As for the weekly graded assignment quizzes, we tried to give you as much openness as possible as well. Every weekly quiz can be taken during the whole week and the week after. Please understand that after this timespan, the quiz can no longer be taken to allow a discussion about the questions.
What are the prerequisites for the final exam?
Everybody is permitted to take the final exam.
What is necessary in order to obtain the certificate?
You will be provided with a certificate of successful participation if you achieve at least 50% of the final score.
How is the final score composed?
50% of the final score is determined by the weekly assignments, the final exam makes up the other 50%.
What are the prerequisites for this course? Do I need to read the book “A Course in In-Memory Data Management” in advance?
You do not need the book. Some database knowledge as well as a basic understanding of SQL will be helpful, but the course is understandable even without previous knowledge.

How long will the assignments be available?
From our experience with the first course, we learned that 2 week slots offer a good compromise between greater flexibility with regards to the self-paced learning goal and keeping the majority of you focussed to specific topics in order to encourage discussions. We believe that this timespan is a good compromise between "focusing" and "flexibility". We added the exact timespans to the agenda below, so you can consider these for your planning.
