Welcome to the openHPI Course "Knowledge Engineering with Semantic Web Technologies"!
In the following weeks you will learn the fundamentals of how to work with Semantic Web technologies and how to apply them in basic knowledge engineering tasks. The first week starts with a brief overview about the history of the web leading to the so-called 'Web of Data'. We will identify issues and problems which arise with the ever-growing World Wide Web. Semantic Web technologies are one possibility to cope with these problems. In the end, Semantic Web technologies will also help to make to Web more 'intelligent' in the way that all represented information can explicitly be annotated with formal knowledge representations bearing the meaning of this information. This is a prerequisite to understand the information on the Web - keeping in mind that 'understanding' in this context means to interpret the information correctly. The first week closes with an outlook on applications that make use of the Web of Data.
