This week, you will learn how to access and query RDF data with SPARQL, the RDF query language. SPARQL for RDF data resources is similar to SQL for relational databases. You will learn to express complex SPARQL queries based on SPARQL 1.0 and the new SPARQL 1.1 and we will try out SPARQL on the live DBpedia SPARQL endpoint. Moreover, you will also learn how RDF data repositories, aka RDF Triple Stores, work and how to publish Semantic Metadata ( = RDF based Data) on the World Wide Web via RDFa and HTML5 microdata (schema.org).
Because of the numerous practical demonstrations with SPARQL, sections 4 and 5 of this lecture will be unusually long (ca. 45 minutes). This is not because there is so many content to learn, but simply because we try out lots of different SPARQL queries on the live DBpedia endpoint for better understanding. Please keep this in mind when planning your weekly course schedule. If this should cause any inconveniencies, we apologize for that.
