This week, you will learn about the Web Ontology Language OWL. OWL (in particular OWL 2 DL) implements the description logic SHROIQ(D) [as you have already pointed out correctly in the discussions, SROIQ(D) is sufficient]. Up to now, we have only talked about the very simple description logic ALC. OWL2 DL provides additional constructors such as e.g. number restrictions, qualified number restrictions, RBox definitions of complex roles (properties), closed classes, and so-called property chains.
We will start with simple ontology definitions with OWL and you will learn OWL step by step. Next, you will learn about rules and how they are able to extend the semantic expressivity of a Description Logic such as OWL. The last two sections of this lecture are dedicated to a brief tutorial on working with the Protégé OWL editor including the VOWL ontology visualization.
